New York Goes Blockchain

The city of New York has officially help to fund and opened the NYC Blockchain Center, the world’s first not for profit blockchain space. New York isn’t giving up on the digital ledger technology that makes Bitcoin and other tokens work even after last year’s collapse of the cryptocurrency market.

It’s a difficult time for the industry. After digital coin prices tumbled last year by as much 90 percent, many startups working on the technology have been forced to lay off staff or even shut down as funding dried up. Last year, New York’s blockchain startups received more than $500 million in venture capital funding, up 500 percent from 2017, according to the EDC. New Yorkers had seen more than 2,200 blockchain-related job postings, up 80 percent from the year earlier, the agency said. The center is not the first blockchain-related community space in the city. Bitcoin Center NYC, which is self funded, has been around since 2013, is open every day and hosts events monthly.

Decentral Founder; CEO Ling Qing Meng was invited to be a keynote speaker at the center on February 19th.

Ling Qing Meng chose to use his time to perform a live, interactive demo of Rust, and it’s multiple uses as a newer language. We believe this raised a lot of valuable learning opportunities for anyone in attendance.

People now want a language that has all 3 things

High Performance Concurrency by design Flawless package management Some topic highlights of Ling’s speech include: Blockchain Development; Web Engineering

  • Build and run a WASM module in react web app.
  • Build and run a runtime (analogous to Smart Contract in the Polkadot ecosystem).
  • Future implications to the blockchain ecosystem that Rust and WASM brings.
  • What is Substrate? Why is this important?
  • What is Rust? How can this be implemented to improve current issues with other languages?

00:01 — Introduction and Background Sharing

01:50 — Explanation of Rust

07:08 —Demo of Elliptic Curve Cryptography in Rust and Module Creation

24:01 — What is WebAssembly? (WASM)

27:55 — WASM Use Cases

36:50 — Introduction to Substrate

Overall, the NYC Blockchain Center shows huge promise for the world’s faith in blockchain, and how this technology can offer all of us a better future. We at Decentral hope to see you soon. To the moon!
